Reaction: Middlesbrough 1 Blues 0

You have to be on your game in this league and we made it too easy for them in the first-half and it is very difficult to come back.

Garry Monk spoke to the press after this afternoon's narrow defeat to Middlesbrough.

Garry Monk on the manner of today's loss...

"When you come up against a team like Middlesbrough away from home, you have to be in the game from the start and in that first-half we weren't. At times we caused our own problems and that gave them momentum and they could have scored more than one, but we came in at the break at 1-0 and then you have a chance, we played a lot better in the second-half but we were not at our best, but it is early days - we have got some new players in and everyone is trying to get to know each other properly, the fighting spirit is there but you have to be on your game in this league, the league demands it against these top teams away from home and we made it too easy for them in the first-half and it is very difficult to come back. We did a lot better in the second-half and you never know going into the last ten minutes only one behind, but unfortunately the red card made it even more difficult for us."

Garry Monk on the opening 45 minutes and their goal...

"We have to be first to the ball and on it from the word go, like I said we didn't do that in the first-half enough. We made too many wrong decisions that allowed them to put pressure on us, but like I said I felt we played a lot better in that second-half and stood up to the challenge more."

Garry Monk on the red card decision...

"For me it wasn't a red card, I looked straight at it, I had the front on view, and for me it wasn't a red card. There was no malice, it wasn't done dangerously. I think the referee was the other side so he could see the challenge from the back of it, he's given it. We will have to have a good look at it, but from my point of view, no, it wasn't a red card."

Garry Monk on sticking with Connal Trueman in goal...

"Camp has come in late in the week, and as I've said the new players need time to settle in. I felt Connal's done excellent up to this point, and I've gone with him today. We have got another game on Tuesday and Lee will play in that, but then the following game on the Friday that's up to me to make the decision."

Garry Monk on team spirit...

"We've been working really hard in pre-season and we know what we need to do. We've got the fighting spirt and the belief and the quality. We didn't show that enough in the first-half today. That's what I've told them in the changing room afterwards, we need to make sure we our onto it and focused from minute one."

Garry Monk on Kristian Pedersen...

"He's going to learn and learn. It is a new league for him, I think the Sky Bet Championship is different to any other league in the world. It is full throttle, it is intense, it has got physicality and it has got good teams with good players. My job is to help him to make sure that he and the rest of the team can progress."
