The most important bit is that these lads have given everything up to this point, but nights like tonight take you back to the reality of the work that needs to be done.

Garry Monk

The Blues boss reacts to this evening’s reversal to the Lions.

Garry Monk on tonight’s home defeat…

“It was hugely disappointing tonight and well below the levels that we know we’re capable of and the changing room knows its capable of. After an initial bright start, we had a first-half full of errors from ourselves, especially with the goals. That proved costly in the end. The defending was poor; too many mistakes and too many individual errors with those goals – one was a counter-attack which should have been dealt with and for the other one a couple of the lads switched off; too easy from our point of view. In any game of football, you can’t make those mistakes, get punished for them and then expect to come back and get the result you want. We really wanted to respond to the result at the weekend and come here tonight and give the fans that positive result. That was the intention, but we never reached the levels required to do that.”

Garry Monk on tiredness not being an excuse for his team’s faltering form…

“I’m not here to make excuses. There are a lot of football in a lot of those legs, but if you want to be a player and you want to be involved in a team that wants better and needs to push on and do better than before, you need to understand that that’s a demand on you as a professional footballer. We all take that responsibility; it’s not just the players, it’s myself as well. The most important bit is that these lads have given everything up to this point, but nights like tonight take you back to the reality of the work that needs to be done."

Garry Monk on the response needed from his side in the remaining matches…

“What’s important in the remaining games is that we finish what has been a really positive season up to this point as strongly as possible. We have a changing room capable of doing that, but it needs a realisation of that happening very quickly. We’re just in a patch at the moment where things aren’t quite going for us. Like tonight, we haven’t performed to the levels that we know we can and what we have to do is respond strongly. We need to stick together and show the spirit that we have this season. These remaining games are vitally important. We have to make sure all the positives that we’ve had from this season don’t go to waste and everything we’ve tried to do needs to come shining through. I’m more than confident that that changing room can do that. We need to show that as soon as possible, which is this Saturday’s game.”

Garry Monk on his selection of Isaac Vassell in the starting 11 in favour of the previously ever-present Lukas Jutkiewicz…

“It was a decision I made to try and win the game, but it’s also another three-game week so I wanted some freshness. We’re in a sticky patch at the moment, and we need to come out of it. There are no excuses tonight, we simply weren’t good enough and at the end of the day to be successful as a player, as a team and as a club, you have to meet the demands of the Championship.”
