Reaction: Hull City 3 Blues 0

In my opinion two things affected the game a lot. The first is that it was definitely a penalty when Bela was fouled in the box.

Pep Clotet's comments after seeing his side beaten by Hull City at the KCOM Stadium...

His overall assessment of where it went wrong for his side against The Tigers...

“History tells us that Hull has traditionally been a very difficult place for Birmingham to come to. But we were confident. We knew they would start very strongly in the first 15 or 20 minutes. We held them for that period and then slowly we started to get a hold of the game and create more attacks. We had to be in the game for the first 20 minutes. Then we got our grip into it. Our football. But in my opinion two things affected the game a lot. The first is that it was definitely a penalty when Jeremie Bela was fouled in the box. If we had scored that it would have had a tactical effect on the game because Hull are a team that feel more comfortable counter attacking. And if we were winning 1-0, we could be the team counter attacking and they would have had to be open and chase the game like we had to do. The second thing is the corner we gave them at the end of the first-half. That came from a mistake and it was poorly defended and put us 1-0 down against a team that would be very comfortable under pressure in the second-half. They were able to break on us because we had to open up the game. The game was open from the beginning, but we had to open it up even more. We did create chances but, again, we didn't score the goals.”

On Hull’s second goal, coming from a break from deep...

“It was a bit harsh on us. We could have defended the second goal better, but for me it was a clear foul on Jukey (Lukas Jutkiewicz) in the build-up. Then (at 2-0 down) you are in a situation when you are trying to put pressure on their box and when it doesn't happen, a move breaks down, you have to track back. Possibly we should have played, at certain times, more forward. In the second part of the second-half we did that.Every time you score or concede right on half-time, it changes the game drastically. It was a disappointing result, especially as we have been gathering a lot of points away from home recently."

Asked if he had spoken to the referee about his decision not to award Blues a penalty…

“We are a side that has deserved more than one penalty in 23 games. We send a report after every game because they ask us to do that. And we always get a letter back (in similar situations) saying,'Yes, it should have been (a penalty)’ but ultimately there's nothing more that we can do than that.”

Pep Clotet on Fran Villalba coming back into the side in the number 10 role, in a the 4-2-3-1...

"In that period in the first-half, we started using him as the way we prepared.
Then his performance got a bit diluted and we then preferred to go with two forwards and try to put the mentality there to go more forward, instead of linking up with the ten. I think they played him very, very well, like we did with (David Davis and) Pereira We managed to get him out of the spaces he liked to be in and Hull managed to do the same with Fran, he was not feeling comfortable. The 30 minutes in the first-half he was bright, but then we had to get him more on the side and get the strikers involved."

Pep Clotet summing up...

"We all know that we need to improve and we will try to do things right next game. We will refocus, get our heads right. The intensity, unfortunately we were half a yard off. Especially in the pressing. We didn't find the comfort."
