Blues Under-23s fell short in a friendly fixture against a Salford City XI on Friday afternnon

Blues Under-23s suffered a narrow defeat against a Salford City XI on Friday afternoon in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the Trillion Trophy Training Centre.

The game was played in difficult conditions, with swirling wind and driving rain affecting the play.

Cheick Keita completed the whole match; in which two trialists also turned out for the hosts.

Blues had a couple of early opportunities, including a decent one that fell to Kane Thompson-Sommers who fired his attempt a yard over the bar.

But Salford, who were acquitting themselves well, were not far away as they fired into the side netting of Blues' goal.

Caolan-Boyd Munce flashed an effort across the front of the Salford goal before the visitors took the lead just a minute before half-time.

An initial effort was saved, but when Blues failed to clear their lines the Salford player made no mistake as he steered his shot into the corner of the net.

Blues upped their tempo after the break and Keita and Ryan Burke saw efforts fly over the bar.

But against the run of play, Salford doubled their advantage after 68 minutes thanks to a goalkeeping error.

The ball was passed back to Ramos, but as the stopper attempted to clear it, he slipped, allowing a Salford player to tap into an empty net.

Blues regained a foothold in the game five minutes later following a neat piece of play.

Boyd-Munce slid the ball through to Concannon, who switched it to the side before slipping it past the 'keeper.

With the game edging towards a conclusion, Blues tried their luck with several long-range efforts but were unable to add to their tally.
