Blues lost 5-2 to the Red Devils but came back from behind to lead in the first half and had good chances in the second half of a topsy-turvy encounter in Solihull.
“To go away from this game as disappointed as we are shows just how far we have come in a short space of time,” said Ward.
“For large spells we were excellent. Was that a 5-2 game? Absolutely not.
“We created a lot. Sadly there a couple of errors that hurt us a little bit and a decision we did not feel was correct which led to the free-kick Katie Zelem scored but there were plenty of positives and we will kick on.
“We are getting better and better and that’s the most important thing right now. You never enjoy a defeat but what there will be is a lot of heart from the performance.
"For 45 minutes we were excellent but we have to work out why we keep conceding right after the break. That’s my job to sort out and we will get there.”
Blues now head into an international break but the graft behind the scenes will continue.
“It will be a second pre-season, the girls are still four or five weeks behind everyone else,” added Ward.
“Ultimately we have to be at the races, we have to get fitter and sharper while implementing our DNA and principles on the players.
“We have to keep building on this. The players were absolutely superb for large spells and I would not fault any single one of them for what they gave me.”
