Reaction: Reading 0 Blues 1

Head Coach Carla Ward was delighted with the team’s performance as Blues picked up their first league win of the season.

Claudia Walker’s second goal in two games was enough to secure our first points of the season against Reading.

Having withstood a barrage of Reading attacks at the start and end of the game, Ward was full praise for the team’s defensive performance.

She said: “Colossal. They threw everything at us towards the end, we talked a lot about concentration and mindset and today they were outstanding.

“I thought every player was exceptional today, I can’t single anyone out for praise, it was a whole squad effort.

“The way we have been defending as a team has been exceptional.

“We may work on defending more than anything else but collectively as a group from back to front, we have defended excellently today.”

After scoring the winning goal in midweek against Blackburn, Walker was again on hand to fire in and give us the win.

Ward said on the striker: “Are we doing much with her? Probably not.

“We are giving her confidence, putting an arm around her shoulder and getting her to believe in her quality.

A tough run of fixtures that saw Blues play five games in 14 days is now at an end and Ward is delighted with the way the team have played in that period.

She explained: “The girls are going to have a few days off now, they deserve it.

“That’s three wins in five, we have had a really tough two weeks and to come away with three wins, we are very happy.”

“We have to keep our feet on the ground, we’ve done really well this week, but can we go and do even better next week.”
