I’m looking forward to the season and to meet all the fans.Tahith Chong
The 21-year-old forward joins the Club on a season-long loan from Manchester United (subject to league clearance) and becomes the second Dutchman to put down roots in the Second City this week after compatriot Juan Castillo completed his move on Tuesday.
A dynamic forward who often operates from the wing with his blistering pace, Chong adds to the attacking options already at the disposal of Lee Bowyer and makes it half a dozen arrivals this summer.
Chong spent six years as a youngster with Feyenoord before joining Manchester United at the age of 16, scoring an eye-catching goal in their 2016/17 FA Youth Cup campaign. That was one of four counters in 15 appearances for the Under-18s that term, with his notable numbers limited by a knee injury that sidelined him for ten months.
Upon returning, Chong made an accomplished step up to Under-23s football and impressed in the UEFA Youth League as he was named United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year in 2018.
This led to a place on the Red Devils’ pre-season tour of the United States and a sequence of appearances in matchday squads during the first half of the 2018/19 season. A First Team debut, firstly in the FA Cup versus Reading and then in the Premier League against Southampton duly followed, ahead of an inaugural Champions League bow as United beat Paris Saint-Germain.
Such continued development saw Chong named Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year before he earned himself a new contract in March 2020.
His growing CV, which includes international caps for the Netherlands at youth level, is bolstered further by experience away from Old Trafford. Last season, he made 28 senior appearances between Werder Bremen and Club Brugge, recording nine goal contributions on the continent.
Having chosen St. Andrew’s as his home for the upcoming campaign, Chong said:
“I’m excited to get started. Excited to get to know my new teammates and everyone at the Club.
“I spoke to the Manager here and heard about the plans the Club has for this season and for me as well.
“He spoke to me about some improvement points and I’m looking forward to working with him. I want to come here and become a better player and develop.
“I’m really looking forward to getting to know the Championship and to see what it brings.
“I’m a player who likes to get at players, like to dribble and beat players. I’m fast and I’ll try to bring that to the team.
“I’m looking forward to the season and to meet all the fans. I think I’m even more excited than they are!”
Chong will remain with Manchester United for the beginning of their pre-season before joining up with Blues at an agreed time ahead of our Sky Bet Championship campaign.
Welcome to Blues, Tahith!
