Report: Crewe Alexandra Under-23s 0 Blues Under-23s 3

It was a thoroughly comprehensive win.

Steve Spooner

Blues Under-23s won their penultimate regular-season fixture as they beat Crewe Alexandra on Thursday afternoon.

Three second-half goals did the damage in a dominating performance away from home that puts Blues in the driving seat to take a play-off spot and extend the season beyond their final game against Wigan Athletic on Monday.

Joe Redmond put the visitors in front two minutes after half-time as he headed in from a corner and the lead was doubled with just over an hour gone.

Kyle Hurst moved inside skillfully before finding the bottom corner and an almost carbon copy rounded off the scoring as substitute Oriel Soldevila hit the far corner late on.

The success on the road came just three days after Blues had emphatically beaten Charlton Athletic at St. Andrew's Trillion Trophy Stadium on Monday evening.

And speaking after the win over the Alex, Under-23s Head Coach Steve Spooner could not speak highly enough of his team's display.

He told BCFC.com: "It was a thoroughly comprehensive win. It could have been more and that would probably be the one thing that was disappointing. That was not because of our players though, it often hit them, the post or the goalkeeper pulled off a good save.

"It was a good solid performance and we managed the game well. It was 0-0 at half-time but we didn't panic. I told the players that and that a goal could come along any time, then we score early in the second-half.

"It was a game we controlled from beginning to end and a thoroughly deserved win."

Spooner was also pleased to see three different scorers and the side record a defensive shutout.

He said: "The fact is that goal difference could play a part in the table. Also, it has been a few games now since we got a clean sheet, so that was important."

The Head Coach also outlined his satisfaction at the efforts of a number of second-year scholars in his side, before remarking how their appearances, coupled with that of Ryan Stirk and Nico Gordon in the First Team, highlights the strong pathway to the elite game at Blues.

Spooner said: "They have settled in and adjusted to the 23s football very good. They are quite physical and they have dealt with it well. They are not coming into a different style of football to the 18s so they understand. There are a few different elements but they have taken on board what we have asked. They have never looked like they don't belong.

"We see it very much as part of the development programme. We see this with Stirk and Gordon now, that is the way that we want it to be. We want to see the players progress. That is what the programme is about and Lee has taken some of the players, had a look at them in training and has felt he can utilise them in the First Team which is great."
